Lili Marleen

It is a classic in the annals of music. The story of Lili Marleen is the love song that shook the Germany of World War II and quickly spread to the other countries participating in the contest. Even today we remember it, and although it is not heard much, it has been successful for decades and is that it has behind a beautiful history of love in spite of its military connotations.

The song was sentimental and mysterious, catchy and beautiful. The German soldier Hans Leip, after being transferred to the Russian front during World War I, composed a poem in which he remembered his girlfriend, Lilí, daughter of a grocer of his town, in which he narrated how they said goodbye every night Under a street lamp at the barracks door.

In front of the barracks,
In front of the gate,
There was a street lamp,
And it is still there.
There we will meet again,
Under the lamppost we will be.
As before, Lili Marleen.

The success he had with the German population and troops was pure coincidence, since at the beginning of the war it was forbidden by the German propaganda minister, Josef Göbbels, thinking that with a nostalgic poetry the war could not be won, but the song that Already had jumped to the radio, began to hear in the barracks and the front and its success was unstoppable.

When the Germans entered Tobruk in June 42, they were surprised that an abandoned gramophone sounded their song in English. Never a song had been sung in a war by the contenders of both sides, each in their language, but that was what happened with "Lili Marleen". Months later, US Army soldiers, and even the Russians, would have their own versions. Before the end of the war, the song was translated into 48 languages and was performed by many singers, becoming the most popular war song to date.
After the war the song was so popular that it was adopted by a large number of armies around the world, in a version sung or adapted as a military march, both with its original lyrics and adapted to the reality of each country. Film also paid attention to this phenomenon. In 1981, Rainer Werner Fassbinder directed the film "Lili Marleen" about the singer's story, based on her autobiography.

This song was the only cultural phenomenon during the Third Reich, which escaped the control of the German Propaganda Ministry. Perhaps it was, in the opinion of the American writer Steinbeck, "the only positive contribution of the Nazis to the world".
And in memory of them they made a monument, nowadays it is one of the monume.

Beautiful Places

Berlin

Berlin’s not exactly known for being beautiful, perhaps because street art and derelict buildings are something of an acquired taste, and decades of division, wars, and David Hasselhoff concerts have left their scars. But dig a little deeper, and you'll find that within this city's diverse streets lie some truly astonishing sights. Here are some of the most downright, unforgettably beautiful.

Reichsburg Coemch

Cochem, with its old castle looming high above, is considered one of the most attractive towns in the Mosel Valley. Highlights of a walking tour around the old part of town include St. Martin's Church, constructed in the 15th century and rebuilt in 1736. And be sure to spend time in the quaint old Marketplace (Marktplatz) where you'll find the majestic old Town Hall built in 1739, as well as a number of historic old heritage homes. The big draw, however, is Reichsburg Cochem, a massive hilltop imperial castle - the largest in the Mosel Valley - that once guarded this stretch of the river. Built in 1020 and later destroyed by the French in 1689, much of the castle was restored in the 19th century in the Neo-Gothic architectural style. Guided tours and events, as well as fun themed tours are also available, and an on-site restaurant offers themed meal packages for kids.
Address: Schlossstraße 36, 56812 Cochem

Traben-Trarbach and the Middle Mosel Museum

Straddling the Mosel River halfway along the Mosel Valley is the quaint little town of Traben-Trarbach, famous for its many old half-timbered buildings and handsome aristocratic homes. One of the most important of these old mansions is the 18th-century Baroque Böcking House, once visited by the likes of Goethe and the Prussian kings and now home to the Middle Mosel Museum. Much of the building's old furnishings and décor have been preserved and are incorporated into the museum's displays spread across more than 20 rooms. Notable features include a collection of paintings by local artists including Ernst Willen Spies, archaeological artifacts from the Roman and Franconian eras, and a model of Grevenburg Castle.
