Berlin
Berlin is the capital of Germany and one of the sixteen German states. It is located in northeastern Germany, just 70 km from the border with Poland. The rivers Spree, Havel, Panke, Dahme and Wuhle flow through the city. With a population of 3.4 million inhabitants, Berlin is the most populated city in the country and Central Europe, as well as the second largest city and the fifth largest urban agglomeration among the countries of the European Union. Founded in 1237 as Cölln, Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia, the Weimar Republic and the Third Reich. After World War II, the city was divided; The eastern part of the city became the capital of the German Democratic Republic, while the western part of the city became an enclave of the Federal Republic of Germany in the interior of East Germany. Berlin is a world-class city and a first-class cultural and artistic center. It is one of the most influential cities in the political sphere of the European Union and in 2006 was chosen Creative City by Unesco. In 2009 the city received the Prince of Asturias Award of Concord.
Berlin Wall Memorial
The Berlin Wall Memorial is the central memorial to the German division, located in the center of the capital. At the historic location in the Bernauer Straße, it stretches over the former border strip for 1.4 km. On the site of the memorial is the last piece of the Berlin Wall, which has remained intact in its depth and gives an impression of the structure of the border installations at the end of the 1980s. The history of the division is illustrated by the remaining remains and traces of the border locks as well as the dramatic events at this place. The memorial site is part of the Berlin Wall Foundation, which also includes the memorial center Marienfelde, the central museum in Germany on escape and departure from the GDR.
